Where Magic Mountain Is Located

From Kanoa Lodge, mountain side in Haapiti, allow about twenty minutes' drive to reach the start of the trail. It is the simplest walk on the island: no guide or private vehicle needed, just sturdy shoes and some small change.

The trailhead is on the north coast of Moorea, at the mouth of Opunohu Bay, on the road to Papetoai. Landmark: Fare Tutava, which sells homemade jams. Just next door, on the mountain side, there is a small car park, a hut and a sign marking the start of the walk.

How to Climb: On Foot, by 4WD or Quad

On Foot

An easy 3.3 km loop, about one hour return for 180 m of elevation gain, no guide needed. You first walk on a sealed road, then a quad track, and a path leads to the lookout. Some sections are steep and there is little shade: the main challenge is the heat.

Shortly after the start, the track forks. Take the left branch: slightly longer, it offers good views over Opunohu Bay and the lagoon. Allow about thirty minutes to the end of the quad track, then the path to the viewpoint. Come back down by the other branch to complete the loop.

By 4WD or Quad, with a Guide

The track is not suitable for a rental car: leave it in the car park at the start. Many rental contracts exclude unsealed tracks, so check yours. To go up without walking, the solution is a guided 4WD or quad tour.

Several operators offer half-day 4WD safaris, often starting with Magic Mountain, before the tropical garden, the distillery, the pineapple fields and the Belvédère. Prices start at 6,500 XPF (≈ €54) per person, hotel pick-up included.

Prices recorded in October 2026, to be confirmed on site: the track is on private land and conditions change.
Option Duration Difficulty Price
On Foot ~1 h return Steep in places, little shade 200 XPF (entry fee)
Rental car — Not suitable for cars Excluded by most contracts
Guided quad 20 min climb Easy, dusty ≈ 12,000 XPF
Guided 4WD safari Half day None from 6,500 XPF

When to Go

Late afternoon is the classic choice: the light becomes softer over the bay and the lagoon. Sunset falls around 5:30 to 6:30 pm depending on the season, and the tropical twilight is short. Bring a flashlight and head back down as soon as the sun sets.

Early morning is often overlooked: it is cooler and there are fewer people. After heavy rain, the track becomes slippery, so it is better to wait a day. During the dry season, from May to October, conditions are good most of the time.

The View from the Summit

On one side, the Papetoai lagoon and its shades of turquoise. On the other, Opunohu Bay running into the island's mountains. It is one of the most accessible viewpoints on Moorea, and one of the most photographed.

What to Bring

  • Hiking shoes - some sections are steep, and the descent is more slippery than the climb
  • Water - at least 1 litre per person: the walk is short but exposed
  • Sun protection - hat and sunscreen: there is very little shade
  • A headlamp - if you stay for sunset: night falls quickly
  • The entry fee - 200 XPF per person, paid at the start: bring some small change
  • Avoid - driving a rental car up the track, blocking the track by parking, or flying a drone over other visitors
